ICC Secretary General Guy Sebban today underscored the need for consistent, private sector engagement with both local and international law enforcement agencies in the fight against product counterfeiting and piracy.

Greater collaboration key to fighting counterfeiting and piracy says ICC Secretary General

Addressing participants of the European Networking Group's Senior Executive Summit on Protecting Intellectual Property, Mr Sebban said working effectively with law enforcement agencies across the globe was the key to success in tackling this menacing, cross-border problem.

“In order to have any chance of long-term success, it is imperative that governments and business work together,” he said.

During his presentation, Mr Sebban stated that product counterfeiting and piracy also required strong, international tools of engagement, such as BASCAP (Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy), ICC’s initiative launched in response to such wide industry concern about the spreading scourge of piracy and counterfeiting of goods.

Last year a quarterly, global economic survey − conducted by the International Chamber of Commerce and the Munich-based Ifo economic research institute − revealed counterfeiting and theft of intellectual property to be among the most pressing problems facing business today.

“With the formation of BASCAP, we are better prepared to tackle the substantial economic and safety concerns posed by mass piracy and counterfeiting of intellectual property,” Mr Sebban said.

“Many companies involved in ICC and BASCAP have already established close working relationships with local law enforcement and custom authorities and we are committed to ensuring that law enforcement officials continue to have access to business expertise and information.”

Mr Sebban took part in the two day summit, held at the NH Hotel in Amsterdam, alongside a host of international experts.
