ICC webinar explains gTLD process for trademark holders
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) will hold a webinar to help its members and the business community better understand the new generic Top Level Domain Name (gTLD) process and the mechanisms available for trademark holders. The webinar will take place on Tuesday 18 June from 16h00-17h00 GMT+2 (Central European time).
As part of the new gTLD system, which was adopted by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Internet address names can be tagged at the end with almost any word in any language. This allows companies to buy web addresses ending with their own brand name instead of “.com”, but will also lead to a proliferation of domain names making it difficult for brand owners to police the use of their trademarks.
Through its webinar entitled New gTLDS and Mechanisms for Trademark Holders, ICC aims to help participants face challenges presented by the new system, as well as to make the most out of the new domain name environment from an intellectual property perspective.
A top-ranking line up of speakers, organized by the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property in cooperation with ICANN, will explain the process and timeline for the launch of the new gTLDs and the tools available to help protect brands.
Speakers and topics include:
- ICANN tools and outreach initiatives for business stakeholders - Christopher Mondini, Vice-President, Business Engagement, ICANN
- New gTLDS programme timeline and process - Christine Willett, Vice-President, new gTLDs Operations, ICANN; and Karen Lentz, Operations & Policy Research Director, ICANN
New Mechanisms for trademark holders
- Trademark clearing house - Jan Corstens, Partner, Deloitte Bedrijfsrevisoren
- Dispute resolution mechanisms and other relevant issues – Flip Petillion, Partner, Crowell and Moring
The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session moderated by Ingrid Baele, Vice-Chair of the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property and IP&S General Manager Business Management Office, Philips.
