3rd annual ICC MENA conference on international arbitration to be held in April

Organized under the auspices of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the event is set to take place in Dubai, the region’s leading city for arbitration.

A highlight in the arbitration calendar, the event is tailored to professionals who want to keep up to date on the latest arbitration developments in MENA. It will gather practising lawyers, corporate counsel, arbitrators, mediators, business professionals and academics coming from or doing business in the region.

Mohamed S. Abdel Wahab, Founding Partner, Zulficar & Partners Law Firm and Chair of Private International Law at Cairo University, Egypt, will speak at a session on international commercial and investment arbitration in Egypt. He said: “Business professionals, states, and courts in MENA are changing their perception of international arbitration. The preferred method to resolve cross-border commercial disputes in the region has in fact become arbitration and this conference will allow exploring issues specific to MENA arbitration, with interactive sessions combining expert presentations and participants sharing best practices from their respective countries.”

Another panel will focus on the city of Dubai, and what it needs to become a true hub of international arbitration, which will also place the region under the spotlight during the event.

“As the world’s leading body for the resolution of international disputes by arbitration, the ICC International Court of Arbitration is committed to bring ICC’s expertise to a wider audience,” said Andrea Carlevaris, Secretary General and Director of Dispute Resolution Services at the ICC International Court of Arbitration, who will speak on a panel on confidentiality in arbitration.

“The application of the confidentiality principle differs from one jurisdiction to another. This panel will feature law experts from Europe, the Middle East and Asia who will explore the differences in the application of this principle in their respective countries. The session will also feature a high-level discussion on what role the Arbitral Tribunal can play in protecting information.”

Preceding the conference, the ICC Institute of World Business Law will run a one-day advanced-level training on the “Conduct of the proceedings and case management – the arbitrator’s perspective” which will take place on 13 April. The pragmatic training will focus on how the arbitrator should establish his authority over the parties throughout the proceedings and deal with his fellow arbitrators.

From learning about effective case management techniques to conducting hearings, this training will allow participants to be actively involved in case scenarios and learn and discuss arbitration issues from both a theoretical and practical standpoint.

Sessions during the training and conference will be held in English and Arabic with simultaneous translation.
