Applicants in this category have developed a project addressing business and their social responsibility actions towards the community, environment, workplace and marketplace activities. For the 2013 edition of the World Chambers Competition, 17 chambers applied to this category.

Biological control of sunn pest - Adana Commodity Exchange

This study was conducted between the years of 2009 and 2012 in Adana,Turkey. As a result of the project, the damage of sunn pest in the region was reduced considerably and the quality of wheat grown in the North of Adana reached the quality of wheat grown in the plains. Between the years of 2009 and 2012, among the wheat samples coming to our cereal analysis laboratory, the percentage of wheat with sunn pest damage was 39.5% in 2009, 23.4% in 2010, and only 6.8% in 2011 and 6.6% in 2012. As a result of the two-year study and the spending of TL50,000, 200.000 tons of forage wheat turned into better qualified wheat and its financial value increased to TL20,000.000.

With the project, the national vocational standards and national qualifications of 10 vocations belonging to the fabricated metal products manufacturing sector will be improved; national qualifications will be added to the National and European Qualifications Framework; vocational knowledge and skill testing questions regarding 10 vocations will be prepared in order to form a question bank; a vocational test and certification centre will be established within Ankara Chamber of Industry and accredited, where people will be certified through testing for 10 vocations. The acquisitions gained will be spread throughout the country and their sustainability will be maintained by developing cooperation between trade organizations, vocational training institutions and the labour market.

CadetMax - Auckland Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry

CadetMax is a solution-based programme developed by the Auckland Chamber to respond to youth unemployment and to build a future workforce. The programme is a partnership between local government, central government, employers, a community and the Chamber and provides career opportunities for at-risk youth. In 2008, the New Zealand economy was growing with unemployment at 3.8 %. But the benefits weren’t reaching youths in South Auckland, one of New Zealand’s largest industrial areas and a low socio-economic community with high unemployment. Businesses needed a reliable supply of new staff with the skills and motivation to work so the Auckland Chamber shifted its training focus and CadetMax was born. Since 2008, CadetMax has worked with more than 600 young people, providing essential life skills, mentoring and career counselling on the journey to education and employment, resulting in major changes in every aspect of the health and wellbeing of young people, their family and the community.

Prisoner training and social/work re-entry - Chilean Chamber of Construction

The project, developed by the Chilean Chamber of Construction, promotes prisoner work and social re-entry through job training and the acquisition of proper working habits and values. Between 2009 and 2011 a total of 410 beneficiaries were selected. The percentage of people who enter the job training stage rose from 77% in 2010 to 90% in 2011 and 2012. Practically nearly all who started the trade training process completed it and were placed in internships in companies in 2010 and 2011. The same projections can be made for 2012. The results show that to date approximately 65% of all participants in the programme continue working in the companies where they did their work experience. Eleven companies have participated to date.The programme has a significant economic impact on the beneficiaries and their families.

The Chamber, as a key organisation in Cambodia, is involved in supporting the project to its members and offers a business friendly, easy to access business accreditation system, that rewards businesses with recognition as they make their journey along a roadmap to develop their environmental management systems.

The Rose hall town fire station project is an apt example of how a Chamber of Commerce can fulfill a crying social need, a need that is crucial to the prevention of loss of lives and property from fire by engaging in a collaborative exercise with the Government. This collaborative exercise resulted in the establishment of a fire station in Rose Hall Town. Because of the many fires through the years plaguing the town, the need for a fire station in Rose Hall Town had always been sorely felt. It was only after the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce was founded in November 2004, that concerted efforts to establish a fire station in Rose Hall Town began in earnest. After constant lobbying and dialogue with the Government of Guyana for two years, it was agreed that the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce will build the fire station with its own resources. The government in turn would provide a fire truck and personnel.

Assistance offices for the promotion of enterprises’ social responsibility - Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania

The world’s pine honey is overwhelmingly produced in Turkey (92%). Marmaris is producing 33% of this whole sum. During the International Muğla Apiculture Congress, Marmaris pine honey won the 1st place for its quality and taste. This has been the starting point of our “Marmaris Honey House Project” based on the pine honey and apiculture activities run by Marmaris Chamber of Commerce. In order to create awareness and a brand mark for Marmaris, the project developed by our chamber is designed in Osmaniye Village to become the centre of an Apiculture Theme Park and apicultural tourism in the future.

There is an ever-increasing need for well-educated seamen in Turkey. Currently, there are schools and high schools to educate seamen, but not on an international level in terms of technological devices and high quality education. The need for more staff in the international maritime sector increases day by day. Under these circumstances, Mersin Chamber of Shipping (MCOS) decided to construct the Anatolian Navigation High-school to meet the increasing needs of Mersin, Turkey and the world for well-educated sea man. Additionally, MCOS also works to establish higher education for the graduates of Navigation High-school, as well as other people in Turkey.

VECCI Timor-Leste Chamber project - Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI)

VECCI Timor-Leste Chamber project’s objective is to assist the Timor-Leste Government and private sector organizations to establish a united and functioning Chamber of Commerce leading to the strengthening of the private sector capacity and the first united Chamber of Commerce in Timor-Leste since the country’s Independence in 2002. The project was crucial in establishing some structure in the private sector and enable business investment leading to job creation and economic growth for the country and a UNITED VOICE to represent and advocate its business needs. This initiative reaffirmed the broad principles that underpinned the establishment of chambers of commerce in the first place. VECCI was established over 160 years ago and today the same broad principles applies in a young nation like Timor-Leste.

Advocacy to mitigate the effect caused by the power crises in Mindanao and its promotion of renewable and sustainable energy - Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation

The focus of discussion of this project is on Zamboanga Chamber’s advocacy to mitigate the effect caused by the power crises in Mindanao and its promotion of the renewable and sustainable energy to the City of Zamboanga. Since this is where the chamber has invested most of its business time and resources, this is where the innovative character of its actions were met to embrace corporate social responsibility, and this is also where it encountered most of its challenges and difficulties. The chamber has ensured that the investigation on the anomalies of its electric distributor in this city, be thoroughly and fairly examined and then impartially adjudicated. It has successfully helped in lowering the cost impact of electricity for all Mindanao Power consumers and successfully organized the ask Force Interruptible Load Program (ILP) and Time-Of-Use Mechanism, a scheme to solve the power deficiency and mitigate the power problem in the City of Zamboanga.
