African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP)

Lead Partners: The Merck Company Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Government of Botswana

ACHAP's comprehensive approach to HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment includes support for community health resource centres like this one.

The African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP) was formed in July 2000 to advance HIV/AIDS prevention, care, treatment and support in Botswana. To bolster the Government of Botswana's response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Merck Company Foundation have each dedicated $50 million to ACHAP. For the duration of the partnership, recently extended to the end of 2009, Merck is also donating two antiretroviral (ARV) medicines to Botswana's national ARV treatment program, Masa. ACHAP's comprehensive approach includes supporting the development of laboratory capacity to test and monitor patients' response to treatment; the development of information technology systems to track patient adherence; the development and implementation of the ARV program; and training for healthcare professionals.
