The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2009. In addition to local and regional celebrations, special events were held throughout the year in a number of cities on three continents.

The theme for ICC’s 90th anniversary was “renewal”. ICC has been immensely successful in adapting and reinventing itself over the past 90 years and must continue to do so as it enters its 10th decade. The anniversary was a year of renewal – and in particular, renewal through thought leadership.

ICC was founded in 1919 immediately after the First World War by responsible business leaders who believed that international trade provided a path to peace and prosperity. They called themselves “merchants of peace”. ICC maintains that “peace and prosperity through world trade” is even more valid today than it was 90 years ago.
