The Republic of Serbia-Montenegro leads the list of those countries whose intellectual property rights are most often violated, with some statistics estimating the country's level of piracy as high as 95%. (1) |

It is estimated that there are over 300 illegal stations operating throughout the country (often using DVDs (sometimes pirate) for their programming). (2)

As of November 2000 there were 700 broadcasters in Serbia of which 95% didn’t have valid licenses. (3)

The country could support a promising legitimate music market. The recording industry reported a piracy level of at least 80%, with losses to the U.S. music industry amounting to $ 12.5 million in 2005. (4)

Serbia/Montenegro is ranked 19th in the 2005 PC Software Piracy Rankings: 20 Countries with the Highest Piracy Rates.

If Serbia and Montenegro reduced their 81 percent software piracy rate by 10 points, the IT industry could grow to nearly $860 million by 2009, creating 1,800 jobs and pumping $420 million into the economy. It could also increase local industry revenues by an estimated $227 million and generate $63 million in additional tax revenues. (5)  |
