Business Action to Support the Information Society (BASIS) Projects:
Work beyond the classical communications with national governments made by national committees.
Inform governments and international organizations involved in the post-WSIS activities and related forums about EBITT's work and positions.
Coordinate and exchange information among BASIS members, especially regarding these forums, and with relevant authorities, like the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers (ICANN) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
Organize business presence and advocate business priorities at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a post-WSIS opportunity for multistakeholder dialogue.
Prepare briefings and interventions for BASIS members to deliver at relevant fora.
Organize and manage briefings and teleconferences for BASIS members.
Represent business views at related events and preparatory meetings, consultations and informal meetings.
Prepare specific position papers for governmental and intergovernmental organizations, or special occasions based on policy statements developed by EBITT.
Meet with government officials to advocate business views on ICTs and the Internet.
Raise media awareness of BASIS activities.
Business Action to Support the Information Society (BASIS)
Tasks for 2008:
Advocate business positions and coordinate presence at the 2008 Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in India and all preparatory processes.
Represent business interests at follow-up and implementation consultations for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
Contribute business input to the WSIS action lines activities and the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD).
Promote an enabling environment for investment in ICTs and entrepreneurship in the Global Alliance for ICTs for Development (GAID) and other related global forums.
Develop outreach programmes to advocate ICC positions on Internet governance and ICT-related policy issues, drawing on the work of the Commission on E-Business, IT, and Telecoms.
Coordinate opportunities for business representatives to profile priorities and positions in global discussions on Internet governance and ICT for development issues.
ICC/BASIS Achievements 2007
- Advocated business positions and coordinated presence at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Brazil (12-15 November 2007) and all preparatory processes.
- Promoted an enabling environment for investment in ICTs and entrepreneurship in the Global Alliance for ICTs for Development (GAID) and other related global forums.
- Represented business priorities at follow-up and implementation consultations for WSIS.
- Contributed business input to the WSIS action lines activities and the UN CSTD.
- Actively advocated ICC positions on Internet governance and ICT-related policy issues drawing on the work of the Commission on E-Business, IT, and Telecoms.
ICC/BASIS Achievements 2006
- Championed business priorities in the preparations for and led business participation in the first Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Athens, 30 October-2 November 2006.
- Represented global business priorities in the formation of the UN Global Alliance of ICT and Development (GAID).
- Advocated business positions and profiled members' initiatives in the follow-up and implementation processes of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS Geneva 2003,Tunis 2005).
- Communicated business positions and priorities on ICT for development and Internet governance issues at several forums around the world, through press efforts, participation, and advocacy efforts.
