University Application

The ICC International Commercial Mediation Competition is open to university teams from all over the world. Only one team per university will be admitted.

Who can apply?
The Competition is open to university students from law schools and business schools.

Only one team per university will be admitted to participate in the Competition.

A team must consist of at least two and a maximum of four students. In each mediation session two team members actively compete against two team members from another team.

The role of the Counsel must be taken by a law student, whereas the role of the Client can be played by a business school student. Accordingly, at least one student in each team needs to be a law student.

Additionally, each team can be accompanied by one coach (for example, a professor). No additional team members (students or coaches) will be admitted as participants.

Please note that pursuant to Rule 5.3 of the Competition Rules, students who have already participated in the ICC Mediation Competition are prohibited to compete again.

Please make sure you have carefully read and understood the exact eligibility criteria according to the Rules prior to applying for the Competition.

Application process
The online application for university teams opens on 18 July 2011 and closes on 21 October 2011.

When applying online, university teams must not yet identify the specific members of their team. Such information must be provided to the Organizing Committee after the teams’ final selection.

ICC will accept around 60 teams to participate in the 2012 Competition.

There are two application periods:

1. 18 July 2011 until 12 August 2011: ICC opens the first 30 places for universities. Accordingly, universities which apply on or before 12 August 2011 will be considered for the first round of selection. The Organizing Committee will notify all universities which have applied on or before 12 August 2001, at the latest by the end of August 2011, whether it has been selected for one of the 30 places.

2. 13 August 2011 until 21 October 2011: The remaining 30 places will be open until the closing of the application process. All teams which applied before 12 August 2011 but were not granted one of the first 30 places, will automatically be considered for the second round of the application process. The Organizing Committee will notify all universities at the latest by the end of October 2011 whether they have been finally selected to participate in the Competition.

The Organizing Committee will select teams based on the following criteria, pursuant to Rule 5.1of the Competition Rules:
  • Preference will be given to universities who offer ADR courses in their curriculum;
  • Preference will be given to universities who have previously participated in the Competition;
  • Representation of cultural and regional diversity amongst the selected universities will also be considered.

Once selected, the teams will be contacted by the Organizing Committee with further information about their registration (payment of the registration fee and indication of the team composition).

Costs
The registration fee is € 500 per team. Full payment of the registration fee prior to arrival at the Competition is mandatory. Teams which do not proceed with the payment of the registration fee will not be admitted to the Competition.

ICC is regrettably not in a position to cover costs for travel and hotel accommodation. Therefore each team is responsible for its own expenses.

Please see the  2012 Competition Rules for a more detailed insight into the Competition.
