Although the Court sits in Paris, the cases it administers are decided by arbitral tribunals based in all continents. Approximately half of the tribunals in the cases commenced in 2000 consisted of sole arbitrators and the other half of three arbitrators. If the parties have not agreed on provisions regarding their nomination, they are appointed by the Court in accordance with the procedure laid down in its Rules of Arbitr ation. In 2000, 812 arbitrators were appointed from 58 different countries.
The activity of the Court and its Secretariat continued to rise, with over 1,000 cases in progress at the end of the year. This caseload is handled by a Secretariat whose staff includes 30 lawyers of 19 different nationalities. The Court, which comprises more than 80 members from 70 countries, met 36 times in committee form and held 12 plenary sessions during the year.
The new cases registered with the Court in 2000 covered a wide range of economic sectors, with notable increases in high technology, energy and transportation. The amounts in dispute were equally wide-ranging, from less than US$ 50,000 to over US$ 100 million. 54% of cases concerned amounts in excess of one million dollars.
