ICC Court begins new term
The newly-appointed members of the ICC International Court of Arbitration took office on 1 January 2003 for a three-year term ending on 31 December 2005.
In its new composition the ICC Court comprises 76 members, 27 alternate members, 9 vice-chairmen and a chairman, from 77 different countries in all regions of the world. For the first time, the ICC Court includes members from Costa Rica, Cuba, Lithuania, Mongolia and Romania.
The widespread geographical origins of the Court's members is matched by their breadth of experience in law and business. Most of the Court's members pursue distinguished legal careers as members of the bar or the judiciary in their respective countries and engage in academic activities as authors and professors.
Whilst many members of the ICC Court take office for the first time, others have been re-appointed. This is also the case of the Court's Chairman, Dr Robert Briner, who enters his third term of office. Dr Briner is a Swiss lawyer and has held a number of eminent positions within dispute resolution bodies, including the presidency of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal.
With an unprecedented total of 593 new arbitration cases filed with ICC in 2002, a busy year awaits the new Court, which meets weekly throughout the year, including a plenary session each month.
