New appointments to ICC Court
At its 188th session held in Paris on 3 December 2004, the ICC World Council appointed four new members and one new alternate member to the ICC International Court of Arbitration. A total of 86 countries in all parts of the world are now represented within the Court, confirming it as the most universal body of its kind.
Dr José Ramón Jiménez Carbo has been appointed member for Ecuador. Dr Carbo, who is a practising lawyer, has held several prominent public positions in his native country, including that of Attorney General.
The newly-appointed member for El Salvador is Mr Ernesto Lima Mena, a practising lawyer and former Chairman of ICC El Salvador. Mr Lima Mena has particular experience of telecommunications and utilities law and has been actively involved in Central American organizations in these fields.
Dr Tomas Herrera Diaz is the new member for Panama. Dr Herrera teaches and practises law and has lectured and written extensively on Panamanian law, in particular relating to finance, banking and insurance.
Dr Mohamed Abdulla Al Roken has become the ICC Court member for the United Arab Emirates. Dr Roken is a lawyer in his native country and also teaches law at the UAE University at Al Ain.
The new alternate member for Switzerland is Professor Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler, who teaches private international law at the University of Geneva Law School and has long-standing experience both as an arbitrator and as counsel in arbitral proceedings. She is also the author of numerous publications relating to arbitration.
Appointments to the ICC International Court of Arbitration are made b y the ICC World Council pursuant to Article 3 of the Court’s Statutes (Appendix I to the ICC Rules of Arbitration). The World Council, ICC’s supreme governing body, normally meets twice a year and includes delegates from ICC national committees and groups throughout the world.
