Statistics on ICC arbitration in 2003
The latest issue of the ICC International Court of Arbitration Bulletin features the annual statistical report on ICC arbitration for 2003. This ten-page document provides figures relating to the geographical origins of parties and arbitrators, the constitution of arbitral tribunals, places of arbitration, applicable rules of law, arbitral awards and much more. It shows for instance that the number of parties from Latin America and the Caribbean rose to a record 12.1% of all parties, including 33 from Argentina, 27 from Mexico and 22 from Brazil. The US continues to be the most frequent nationality amongst ICC arbitration users. As far as awards are concerned, there are figures relating to the ICC Court’s distinctive scrutiny process, majority awards and the correction and interpretation of awards. The report concludes with statistics on ICC’s other dispute resolution services: ADR, expertise and DOCDEX.
In addition to the Statistical Report, this issue of the Bulletin (Vol. 15/No. 1, Spring 2004) also contains previously unpublished extracts from twenty ICC arbitral awards dealing with the subject of interest. These extracts are accompanied by an introduction and commentary and an article by ICC Court member James O. Rodner focusing on the applicable interest rate in international arbitration.
Two further articles – one on the recent reform of Japan’s arbitration law by ICC Court member Hiroshi Oda, and the other on dissenting opinions in arbitration by Hans Smit – complete this issue of the Bulletin.
