To better integrate Spanish-speaking countries into the international trademark system, Spanish was added as a third language in the international registration system for trademarks in 2004. Now ICC is pleased to announce the publication of its roadmap on current and emerging intellectual property issues for business in Spanish.
The native language of over 360 million people and the main language in over 20 countries, Spanish also ranks in the top five languages of Internet users.
Further to the integration of Latin American countries into international, regional and bilateral trade frameworks containing intellectual property regimes, interest in intellectual property is growing fast in the region.
"In Latin American countries, knowledge on how to use intellectual property for development is not sufficiently disseminated," said Peter Dirk Siemsen, Brazilian Vice-Chair of the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property. "There is a great need for the kind of clear and concise information on major intellectual property issues that the roadmap provides. With both the Spanish and Portuguese translations of the roadmap now available, we can reach readers in all of Latin America."
The Spanish version of the roadmap joins the Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and English versions already available on the ICC website.
The 2007 issue is the eighth edition of the roadmap, which is revised every year by an international team of ICC experts. This edition addresses the opportunities and obstacles posed by the rapid rise of the Internet and the increase in disputes over intellectual property rights. It also includes an updated section on enforcement, highlighting the urgent need for adequate resources to uphold intellectual property laws.
