As a sign of the rising importance of Latin America in international trade and investment, and the consequent increasing need to resolve the cross-border disputes that arise, the International Chamber of Commerce is holding its 6th annual conference in Miami (9-11 November) on international commercial arbitration in Latin America.
Over the years, the conference has become a vital tool for arbitration professionals who need to keep up with the ins and outs of regional differences in arbitration, as well as the latest developments in this rapidly-evolving field. Attendance at the conference has grown annually and is this year expected to surpass the 250 who participated in 2007.
“The ICC arbitration conference on Latin America is now a mainstay in the agenda for practicing lawyers, corporate counsel, arbitrators, mediators, and academics in the region,” said Pedro J. Martinez-Fraga, Partner, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey LLP, Miami.
What is more, the ICC International Court of Arbitration is seeing a rising number of cases filed in Latin America, now amounting to 12.7% of the total case load.
Sessions will be held in English and Spanish during the two-day conference on the following topics, among others:
- State arbitration: contracts v. treaties
- A mock plenary session of the ICC Court will show how critical issues surrounding the ethics of arbitrators in a Latin American context are analyzed and resolved
- Preliminary measures in international arbitration
- Round table on comparative judicial approaches to international arbitration
- Arbitrating corporate disputes, including arbitrating joint ventures
As an added bonus, young arbitrators are invited to gather at a special event Sunday afternoon, 9 November, for sessions on case management from the point of view of counsel and arbitrator.
A number of high-level judges from the region will be among the speakers at the conference.
The 6th Latin America arbitration conference has been underwritten by over 30 sponsors and supporters.
