ICC Institute masterclass for arbitrators proves hit with legal practitioners
Paris, 15 June 2009

The advanced-level training will provide practical and theoretical guidance

International commercial arbitration is a flexible, cost-efficient and quick method for resolving disputes that has flourished in recent years with the emergence of a global economy. Yet specific advanced-level training for arbitrators on the subject remains limited and time consuming.

The ICC Institute of World Business Law is introducing an annual Masterclass for Arbitrators to its schedule of events to bring experienced counsel – who have little or no experience as arbitrators – up to speed with the latest developments in the field. The two-day masterclass will provide a rare opportunity to learn firsthand from over a dozen of the world’s leading arbitration practitioners and the first edition has already sold out, prompting ICC to set up an online waiting list for future events.

Serge Lazareff, Chairman of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, said: “The interactive nature of the class will ensure that participants not only reinforce their current knowledge of arbitration but also learn about the best practices and updates related to serving as an arbitrator.”

The advanced training requires participants to have already mastered the essentials of international arbitral proceedings and ICC Arbitration.

Topics that will be covered in the training include:

• Appointing arbitrators
• Commencing proceedings – including communications with the tribunal and parties, and fixing a calendar
• Establishing authority
• Conducting hearings efficiently and fairly
• Relations between arbitrators
• Challenging and replacing arbitrators
• Drafting enforceable awards
• Arbitrator immunity

Mock cases will be a feature of the masterclass, providing participants with practical guidance while also helping to develop an understanding of theoretical concepts.

The inaugural ICC Institute Masterclass for Arbitrators will take place at the ICC Secretariat in Paris from 22-24 June 2009.
