"In 1992, BP stated its support for the goals of sustainable development adopted at the Rio conference that year. These were first defined in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development as "development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

"BP Amoco continues to develop and implement strategies to address the key environmental issues facing society today. Our work on Climate Change is a current example. We have set ourselves a goal to reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases by 10% from a 1990 baseline over the period to 2010. By 2001, all major BP-Amoco sites worldwide will have their environmental management systems certified to the ISO 14001 standard, and be producing verified site environment reports. The following summarizes our operations that have formally satisfied the requirements for external certification of their environment management systems:

ISO 14001
24 Exploration
14 Downstream
7 Chemicals
3 Solar

EMAS
11 Exploration
5 Chemicals
1 Solar"
