"The ICC Business Charter for Sustainable Development has provided an excellent touchstone from which Rio Tinto has developed its own policies and procedures in the field of environmental protection and performance. It has been extremely useful in helping formulate our approach to sustainable development, both internally around the Group and externally to demonstrate our commitment to sound environmental performance. Rio Tinto's Statement of Business Practice - makes specific commitment to this ICC Charter in the environmental field of Rio Tinto's policies.

"Rio Tinto's target is that all of its 61 operations across 20 countries will implement ISO 14001 or an equivalent environmental management system by 2002. We are on track: 41% have implemented ISO 14001 and a further 48% are in the process of implementing a system. Our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy is based upon:

  • Building from a foundation of compliance with applicable laws, regulations and voluntary commitments;
  • Seeking continuing improvement through setting and reviewing targets, assessing and reporting performance and using best available practices appropriate to local conditions;
  • Contributing to the development of sound legislation and regulations;
  • Fostering a better understanding of HSE issues pertinent to the Group's activities.

"We see the way ahead for 2000 and beyond as including the implementation of programs to improve the safety culture of the Group to meet our goal of zero injuries and developing tools to improve the consistent application of best practice across the Group including the development of guidelines for environmental and social impact assessment and risk assessment. Rio Tinto is one of the group of mining companies examining the role of mining in the context of sustainable development through the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) and is expanding its external assurance programs through improvements to verification programs and dialogue with stakeholders."
