"We signed the Charter
and formed our company policy at the same time, basing it directly on the Charter.
It provided us a confident and firm base upon which to build our EMS. We operate
in sensitive areas like the baltic sea ports. Society has expectations for Silja's
environmental responsibility. Therefore, we wanted to commit to a recognized
programme - like the ICC Charter - then move forward to ISO 14001. We find that
most of the 16 Principles are directly adopted in our day-to-day practices-starting
from Principle #1 - which is one of the highest priorities of the Board of Directors.
We also find the Charter especially valuable for maintaining our focus on training
employees, supporting research, making arrangements with contractors and suppliers,
and implementing emergency arrangements for our vessels."
