"Our involvement with
the ICC Business Charter stimulated us to produce our first corporate environmental
report. The Charter Principles helped us to identify the important issues we
needed to address in formulating our own environmental policies. It helped us
determine what was necessary for a successful EMS. If you look at our programmes
today, you will see many of the principles of the Business Charter.
"In 1996 Unilever renewed
its commitment to the ICC Charter for Sustainable Development. The Charter's
code on environmental management underpins our management systems. In the same
year, an external environmental advisory group on the environment and sustainable
development was formed. Unilever is committed to meeting the needs of customers
and consumers in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner, through continuous
improvement in environmental performance in all our activities.
"We require all our
operations to manage and report their environmental performance using consistent
systems and high standards. We are making good progress to ensure this happens.
Our environmental management systems have been developed to be fully compatible
with the internationally recognised standard called ISO 14001. Although external
certification is optional, so far 13 Unilever sites have achieved ISO 14001
certification and many more are working towards the standard."
