UPM-Kymmene assisted the ICC in developing the Business Charter in the early years. They note that the Charter is particularly useful for companies in the process of developing their environmental programs or as a check-list for companies with sophisticated programmes already in place.

"It was useful and easy for us to look at the Charter, compare our programs, and determine that we had covered all the bases. For the most part, by signing the Charter we are giving our support to the global assessment of sustainable development. We are expressing our commitment to sustainable development by doing things 'the right way'. Its primary usefulness for us today is in dealing with other business sectors, contractors and suppliers. Its value is in working with others. We can point to it to communicate what we are doing and what we expect from them."

Hannu Nilsen
Vice-President for Environment

At UPM-Kymmene one can see a wide variety of Business Charter Principles at work thoughout the business units. In particular, UPM is very active with Principle #11, Contractors and Suppliers, due to the number of trucking contractors working for the organization and the need to coordinate the activities and policies. Principle #13, Transfer of Technology, has been evident with the introduction of the lastest technologies in the new 'green-field' plant in China. And Principle #16, Compliance and Reporting, is a critical part of all UPM programs. In fact, UPM believes that the compliance and reporting programs pioneered in Northern Europe can serve as models for other ICC member countries worldwide.
