The
well-armed approach to combat corruption
Paris,
1 March 2005
In recent years, issues of corporate governance and business ethics have
become pivotal corporate concerns. ICC's book of the month, Fighting
Corruption, suggests concrete ways for companies to respond to the
often bewildering range of current ethical requirements.
The book is recommended
by the UN Global Compact
which challenges companies to uphold basic principles in labour standards,
environmental protection and human rights
as a practical handbook for managers of all companies, responsible for
administering corporate compliance programs in line with the International
Chamber of Commerce Rules of Conduct to Combat Extortion and Bribery.
The rules are currently
being updated following the Global Compact's recent adoption of a 10th
principle that commits participants to developing policies and concrete
programmes to address corruption.
In the publication's
foreword, ICC Secretary General Maria Livanos Cattaui writes: "ICC
has been concerned about corruption, bribery and extortion and their effect
on international business for over 25 years, longer than any other international
organization."
The ICC Commission
on Anti-Corruption actively led the business community during the consultation
process leading up to the signing of the UN Merida Convention and to the
formal adoption of the 10th prin
ciple at a Global Compact Leader's Summit
which took place on 9 December in New York last year.
Fighting Corruption
was developed by the Commission and is edited by its Chair and Vice-Chair,
François Vincke and Fritz Heimann.
In April an ICC seminar
will also assess the risk of inadvertently being associated with fraud
or other criminal activity and the impact it could have on the reputation
of a company. It will identify some key vulnerabilities in trade, shipping
and banking and suggest ways of countering the threats. The criminal threat
to banking and trade seminar will be led by Pottengal Mukundan, Director
of ICC's Commercial Crime Services.
Fighting Corruption
can be purchased online from the ICC Business Bookstore at www.iccbooks.com.
