Preamble
With a goal of studying legal issues affecting international business law and strengthening the links between teaching institutions and practitioners, the ICC Institute of World Business Law (the “Institute”) has decided to award a Prize (the “Prize”) designed to support the focused research in this field.

Article 1
The Institute's Prize is designed to recognize excellent legal writing in the field of international commercial law, including arbitration. The Institute's Prize is open to doctoral dissertations and long essays. It can be entered by individuals or collectives.

Article 2
The Council of the Institute shall (a) decide whether to award the Prize biennially or triennially, (b) determine the amount of the Prize for each competition (the “Competition”), and (c) issue a statement outlining the conditions of entry, including the amount of the Prize, no later than 31 December of the year that precedes each Competition. This amount is for this edition €10,000.

Article 3
The Council of the Institute may elect to choose a more specific theme for each Competition.

Article 4
The works submitted for the Prize should be of 200 to 250 printed pages in length, excluding prefaces, indexes, tables of contents and appendices. The works shall be sent to the Secretariat of the Institute at the contact address indicated below by 1 July of the year of the award (as attested by the date of posting franked by the postal service). For this edition, 1 July 2009.

Article 5
Co-written works will be accepted, on the condition that each co-author expresses his/her consent.

Article 6
The Competition shall be open to any person except members and former members of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, members of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and its Secretariat, employees or colleagues from jury members’ companies/organizations.
Candidates should not be older than 40 years of age on the closing date for entries. For this edition, 1 July 2009.
Works can be submitted once only.

Article 7
The works may be written in one of the two official languages of ICC, English or French.

Article 8
The works shall be unpublished and shall be sent in one paper copie and one pdf electronic version to the contact address indicated below. The name of the candidate should not appear on the work. It should be stated in a separate letter also mentioning the candidate’s nationality, date of birth and full address. The candidate shall indicate in this letter his/her consent, that of his/her co-authors, and the reasons for applying for the Prize. The Jury will be made aware of the identity of the candidates for each work after its decision has been taken, pursuant to Article 10 below.  Entries will not be returned.

Article 9
The Council of the Institute elects a Jury from its own members, comprising at least three persons of different nationality to decide each Competition.  The size of the jury panel is at the discretion of the Institute and depends on the number of thesis received.

Article 10
The Jury is free to select the winning work, divide the Prize or not to grant the Prize. If the Jury elects a winning work, the Prize shall be presented at the ICC Institute of Business Law Annual Meeting. 

For this edition,  8 December 2009. 

The Jury’s decision is final.

The Institute reserves the right to modify or cancel the Competition if circumstances arise. In this case, the Institute will not be liable for damages.

Article 11
Authors shall retain the copyright of their works and are free to publish them once the jury’s decision has been announced. The winner is encouraged to mention the Institute's Prize on any subsequent publication.

Article 12
Modifications to the present Rules can be made by the Council.

Article 13
By submitting an entry, candidates agree to the Rules set out in this document.
