Drawing upon the experience of renowned arbitrators in a multicultural and international environment, the global business organization will organize a PIDA training on international commercial arbitration that will study a mock case under the ICC Rules of Arbitration.
The three-and-a-half day seminar from 17 to 20 May will meet the practical needs of those involved in international trade and will simulate how ICC Arbitration functions, highlighting differences in cultures and legal practices. Participants will develop first-hand experience and knowledge of the ICC Rules and practice of international commercial arbitration tools that have become essential in today’s international business environment.
Under the auspices of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, the training is designed for legal directors and corporate counsel from companies involved in international commercial arbitration; magistrates; practising lawyers; legal practitioners who advise international trading companies; and business people involved in international trade and dispute resolution.
“I have participated in other ICC PIDA trainings as speaker or chairman and I always found that they mutually enrich both the attendants and the speakers,” remarked Antonio Crivellaro, the Chairman of this PIDA training. “It is a wonderful opportunity to group practitioners from different regions and legal cultures.”
“Discussing in such a composite context the rules and practices of international arbitration for resolving commercial disputes stimulates a spontaneous and lively debate on the most crucial issues in substantive and procedural law, be it domestic or international,” he added. “Young international lawyers, for instance, should not miss opportunities of this nature.”
Seminar participants will study a mock case with the working groups limited to roughly 10 participants. The case will be sent to participants before the training so that they can read the facts, prepare to work in groups, and identify the contractual clauses which cover the events mentioned in the facts. They will then simulate an arbitral hearing, presenting testimony and other evidence and carrying out cross examinations.
The seminar sessions will discuss topics including the state of arbitration in the world today; the general principles of arbitration; the selection and appointment of arbitrators; and the powers, duties and roles of arbitrators.
