United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD)

ICC plays an active role in the UN's work on sustainable development, particularly through its cooperation with the CSD in the decade since the Rio de Janerio Earth Summit' in 1992, and through the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

ICC has been the catalyst for business action at major meetings of the CSD in recent years, particularly in 2000 on the theme of agriculture and in 2001 on the theme of energy and transport. In 2002, ICC led the business community's participation during the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002, under the name Business Action for Sustainable Development' (BASD), in association with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

In 2005, ICC partnered with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) to set up the Business Action for Water (BAW), an ad-hoc, temporary business initiative bringing together a comprehensive network of businesses, large and small, drawn from many sectors and regions around the world. BAW was established to provide business input into the 13th session (11-22 April 2005) of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), which focused on water, sanitation and human settlements, and to other important forums in that timeframe.

In 2006/7 the two year cycle of CSD 14/15 will address the thematic issues of energy, climate change, atmospheric pollution and industrial development and ICC is once again be leading the business delegation with the Business Action for Energy (BAE) initiative, a temporary, ad hoc project designed to provide a platform for business input into CSD 14 and 15.

The CSD-16 session (5-16 May 2008) focuses as a review year on the thematic issues Agriculture, Rural development, Land, Drought, Desertification, and Africa. Furthermore it reviews the implementation of CSD-13 decisions on Water and Sanitation to which ICC contributed through "Business Action for Water (BAW)".
