The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
Conceived as a practical tool for translating the principles of Agenda 21 into reality, the Convention recognizes that biological diversity is about more than plants, animals and micro organisms and their ecosystems – it is about people and our need for food security, medicines, fresh air and water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live.
Two Task Forces ensure business input
ICC has identified as a strategic priority the need for our organization to focus its resources on activities of benefit to the business community to which ICC can bring true added-value. The UN Convention on Biodiversity (UN CBD) is a very broad convention that is maturing rapidly and has the potential to impact many ICC members across sectors. Therefore ICC has created the Task Force on CBD and the Task Force on Access and Benefit Sharing
ICC Task Force on CBD to address environmental and development issues
As it stands now, many of the concerns CBD addresses overlap with environmental and development issues, particularly in the field of agriculture. These issues are largely dealt with by working bodies within ICC's Environment and Energy Commission. The ICC Task Force on CBD focuses its attention on aspects of the CBD with the broadest potential for private sector impact, and plays a secondary support and coordination role on industry specific areas.
ICC Task Force on Access and Benefit Sharing
The ICC Task Force on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) under the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property works to ensure that business messages on access to and benefit sharing (ABS) of genetic resources are conveyed to intergovernment and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). al organizations and key government negotiators. In particular, the task force focuses on the work of the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD)
