Business is committed to helping promote the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This is reflected by the increasing engagement of different sectors in the various areas under discussion in the CBD. Business commitment to CBD objectives is also demonstrated by the actions of individual companies and sectors to help conserve biodiversity, promote its sustainable use and encourage the fair and equitable sharing of any benefits arising out of the use of genetic resources.
One of the key messages of International Biodiversity Day (IBD) 2008 is that sustainable agriculture both promotes and is enhanced by biodiversity, and produces lasting economic and social benefits.
To celebrate IBD, ICC organized a series of events on this theme during the Ninth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 9) to the CBD, held in Bonn, Germany:
An exhibit present for the duration of COP 9 (19 May to 30 May), providing information from a range of industry organizations and companies about new technologies and their use in sustainable agriculture. Click for details.
A reception in the exhibit booth on 21 May, to showcase the vital role of business in promoting sustainable agriculture, which in turn promotes biodiversity. Click for details.
A special side-event on 22 May (IBD) to highlight how plant breeding and integrated crop management, which combines good agricultural practice and technological solutions, offer the best hope for sustainable agriculture. Click for details.
