ICC activities during CBD COP 9

Exhibit - Monday 19 May to Friday 30 May 2008

"Sustainable Agriculture" contributions by the private sector
Integrating biodiversity conservation into agricultural production
Replicating and scaling up winning solutions

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) exhibit provided a consolidated venue for industry information material around the theme of the exhibit. It was also a meeting place for discussions with industry experts and representatives from associations and companies, all convened under the umbrella organisation of ICC, with ICC Germany providing in-country coordination.

Information material included videos of developing country farmers discussing technologies used, printed case studies of sustainable farming practices and technology transfer experiences, and information provided by the participating industry associations and companies. 

 

Companies and industry associations that participated included the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the US Council for International Business, the International Seed Federation (ISF), the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP), the European Seed Association (ESA), Greman Plant Breeders Assoication (BDP), CropLife International, Limagrain, Bayer CropScience, Dupont, Monsanto, Pioneer, Syngenta and Chiquita.

Side-Event - Wednesday 21 May at 18:10pm - 18:40pm in conference room BMVBS 0.133

 

Real World Experience in ABS from Sarawak, Malaysia - hosted by ICC and the Access and Benefit Sharing Alliance (ABSA) and Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO).

 

COP 9 Presentation - Eileen Yen IIEileen Yen, Former Director, Sarawak Biodiversity Center in Malaysia spoke on "Industry, Government and Traditional Communities: Making Capacity Building and Technology Transfer Work for ABS in Sarawak", with the discussion being moderated by Susan K. Finston, Executive Director, Access and Benefit Sharing Alliance (ABSA).

Reception - Wednesday 21 May

On the evening of 21 May ICC hosted a reception for delegates interested in sustainable agriculture. It took place at the ICC exhibit at booth 85 in the "Campus of Diversity" (see above), and was very well attended by delegates at COP 9.

Side-Event - Thursday 22 May at 13:15pm - 14:45pm in conference room BMU 1.130

Celebrating International Biodiversity Day : "Sustainable Agriculture" contributions by the private sector
Integrating biodiversity conservation into agricultural production
Replicating and scaling up winning solutions

At the event farmers and breeders from different regions of the world highlighted examples of how biodiversity conservation can be integrated into agricultural production. The key note speaker was Jack Wilkinson, President of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers. The event was be staged as a contribution by the private sector to International Biodiversity Day (IBD), the theme of which this year is "Biodiversity and Agriculture".

The Executive Secretary of the CBD Secretariat, Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, opened the side event (pictured on right).
