Lauri Railas
Mr Railas is an attorney-at-law at Krogerus Attorneys Ltd. based in Helsinki, Finland. His practice includes a variety of sectors relating to contract law and logistics including public procurement and competition law, e-commerce, international trade law, transport law, documentary credits as well as insurance law, in addition to which Mr Railas also works regularly with European law matters. Mr Railas served as the Secretary General of ICC Finland from 1991 to 1996. Mr Railas wrote his doctoral dissertation on the relationship between international trade law and the emergence of the legal regime for e-commerce, which covered also the ICC work cross-sectorally and for which the Vice-Chair of the CLP Commission, Professor Jan Ramberg, kindly served as the opponent.

Vitae

After graduating from the Finnish law school Mr Railas made further studies in international trade and transport law at the University of London (LSE) as well as in the Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law in Oslo. In 1987-90 Mr Railas worked for Sampo Insurance Company Limited with a special focus on marine insurance including hull, P&I and cargo. In 1990, Mr Railas joined the Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland, where his duties included intellectual property and technology law. The first Finnish agreed document on software, hardware & related services saw daylight during that time. Mr Railas also served as the Secretary of the Board of Arbitration of the Central Chamber for six years. During his years in ICC Finland, a national interpretation panel on Incoterms took shape. In 1993, ICC Finland published the regular Russian/English version of Incoterms in 1990. In 1996, a national ICC document designed for contracts of carriage, the Standard Shipping Terms 1996 was published. 
 
The years 1996-2002 Mr Railas spent in Brussels as a Principal Administrator at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, first as a Legal Advisor  in the Legal Service, later in the Directorate General responsible for the Internal Market. Mr Railas served as the Secretary for Working Parties for Public Procurement, Competition, Company Law and Insurance. After returning to Finland, Mr Railas first joined academic circles to finalise his dissertation but sooncommenced his career as a private lawyer.
