Business
initiative on domain names
Paris,
19 November 1998
Business associations around the world were today invited to contribute to a
coordinated international business approach to the formation of the new Internet
Domain Name Supporting Organization (DNSO).
The invitation took the form of an open
letter from key business groups that has been
published on the web site of the International Chamber of Commerce. For the
time being, ICC has agreed to act as informal secretariat for developing the
business consensus.
The letter said it was essential for business to have a significant
voice within the DNSO, the organization that will make policy recommendations
to the new Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
"Maintaining operational stability of and consumer confidence
in the Internet as a channel of trade and communication are our unifying priorities,"
the letter said. It listed as key DNSO issues competition, the introduction
of new top level domains that go beyond ".com", trademark rights and
dispute resolution mechanisms.
Signatories so far are: Business and Industry Advisory Committee
to the OECD (BIAC), European Brands Association (AIM), European Communities
