ICC pays homage to Bernard Wheble
Paris, 25 February 1998 - Bernard Wheble, who exercised a leading influence on banking practice in international trade, died in London yesterday. For many years Mr Wheble was Chairman of the Banking Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He was 93.
Maria Livanos Cattaui, Secretary General of ICC, issued the following tribute in recognition of Mr Wheble's long years of service to the world banking community and to ICC:
"Bernard Wheble was known in banking circles throughout the world as ¢â‚¬Ëœthe father of documentary credits'. He served as chairman of the ICC Banking Commission for more than two decades. During that time, he guided the commission through several versions of the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits, the rules on letters of credit that serve the banking community worldwide.
"Author
of several books on the financing of international trade, Mr Wheble was formerly a board member of the London merchant bankers Brown Shipley & Co. Ltd and a consultant with the Committee of London and Scottish Bankers.
"A brilliant writer on complex subjects, Mr Wheble won the respect of bankers worldwide, even those who disagreed with his views. Until only a few months before his death, he continued to give ICC the benefit of his shrewd analysis of the technicalities of letters of credit.
"The death of Bernard Wheble represents a great loss to the world of banking and to ICC. He will be profoundly missed."
