Governments and business tackle Y2K problem

Paris, 28 August 1998
- Business and government will explore cooperative solutions to the Millennium Bug problem at a conference in London on 15-16 October, the International Chamber of Commerce announced today.

The Global Year 2000 Summit, bringing together international policy-makers and top business experts, will take up the challenges posed by the century date change in IT applications. It will be the first official meeting on Y2K between intergovernmental organizations and leading business groups.

Keynote speaker will be Frances Cairncross, Senior Editor of The Economist and author of The Death of Distance. She will describe the "Global Year 2000 Landscape". Also, Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., Chairman of the Joint Year 2000 Council and U.S. Federal Reserve System Governor, will provide his own perspectives on the urgency of the issue.

World class experts will speak in sessions focused on national strategies to address the Y2K problem, alternative dispute resolution, public and private sector status reports, contingency planning and crisis management.

Confirmed speakers include:
M.J.L.M. Rens, CIO and Executive Vice-President, KLM Airlines

Ron Balls, Chairman, Year 2000 Task Force, International Telecommunications Union and Year 2000 Networks Compliance Manager, British Telecom

Tim Shepheard-Walwyn, UBS AG and Chair, Joint Year 2000 Council.

Fuad Udemans, Strategic Services Executive, South Africa's National Year 2000 Decision Support Center

The Global Year 2000 Summit is being organized by the World Bank, the Joint Year 2000 Coordinating Committee (Bank for International Settlements), the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Telecommunications Users Group, the World Information Technology and Services Alliance, Global 2000 Coordinating Committee, and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The Global Year 2000 Summit will take place at the Stakis Metropole Hotel in London.
