Documentary
credits newsletter a resounding success
Paris, 29 January 1999
- The International Chamber of Commerce quarterly newsletter, Documentary
Credits Insight, now entering its fifth year, has subscribers in more than
130 countries. With its mix of commentary, provocative analysis and texts of
key ICC documents, the newsletter has become re
quired reading for bankers and
traders dealing with letters of credit (L/Cs) worldwide.
The latest issue, available at the end of January,
carries a lead story on the Latin American financial crisis and how it impacts
on documentary credits. As a result of the Brazilian devaluation and other uncertainties,
"buyers, sellers and banks are much more cautious about foreign trade deals,"
the article states.
Other articles in the winter issue include a dissection
of the new ISP rules on standby letters of credit, a series of official responses
to queries on L/Cs posed to the ICC Banking Commission, a jaundiced look by
a trader at usance and at sight credits, and a special section on electronic
trade. The latter, highly topical in view of the recent surge in electronic
commerce, contains analyses of ICCs new draft Rules for Electronic Trade
and Settlement and a look at the Year 2000 computer problem and how it can affect
letters of credit.
Ron Katz, the editor of DCI, attributes
the magazines success to its confrontational, free-wheeling style. "We
dont shrink from the tough issues and we dont always reflect the
views of ICC," Mr Katz said. He adds: "I think people who read us
know that we try to include a range of views and that we make an honest effort
to make the arcane world of L/Cs accessible to everyone."
