Japanese power utility
tackles global warming on international scale
Tokyo, 26
November 1999 - The
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) joins ICC's web pages dedicated to the
Global Compact between business and the United Nations with an account of innovative
schemes in five countries to combat global climate change and environmental
degradation.
Although TEPCO's main business
is to supply electricity to Tokyo and its surrounding area, it has placed itself
in the vanguard of the world's largest power utilities in tackling global warming
with schemes in Australia, China, Indonesia, Russia and Thailand.
TEPCO is among the first
companies to contribute to the Global Compact pages. The site responds to a
challenge to business from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to cooperate in promoting
a set of shared values. The areas covered a human rights, labour standards and
the environment.
As it develops, the Global
Compact site will present an intricate mosaic of business initiatives relevant
to the Compact. Early contributions show how Akzo Nobel is making h
ealth, safety
and environmental protection an integral part of its business policy, how Unilever
is promoting sustainable farming, and how Glaxo Wellcome is developing a worldwide
good corporate citizenship programme.
The Italian car maker, Fiat,
describes commitments with the Environment Ministry in Rome to reduce CO2 emissions
from road traffic, to recycle scrapped motor vehicles, and to introduce buses
and trucks that will use alternative fuel sources.
TEPCO's efforts include:
Participating in a carbon
dioxide cutting afforestation project in Australia
Supporting the efficiency improvement of coal fired thermal power stations
in China
Constructing micro-hydro generation facilities as part of a local electrification
scheme in Indonesia
Studying how to update power generating facilities in Russia including the
incorporation of advanced combined cycle generation technology
Assisting Thailand through the provision of technical support for the installation
of thermal storage heat pump systems
