New focal point for Thai
business
Paris, 6
September 1999 - The
International Chamber of Commerce this week launched a national committee in
Thailand, giving Thai business a new focal point for its global activities.
ICC Secretary General, Maria
Livanos Cattaui, joined Thailand's deputy Prime Minister and future Director
General of the World Trade Organization, Supachai Panitchpakdi, at the inauguration
of the new body in Bangkok.
Mrs Cattaui paid tribute
to the energy and vision with which Thai business has responded to the recent
Asian financial crisis. She commented: "Thai business demonstrates the very
best of what ICC stands for - a belief in free trade and in the wealth-generating
benefits of international commerce, combined with entrepreneurial vigour and
business vision".
ICC has long had a presence
in Asia, with national committees in Japan, Singapore and Indonesia established
more than 40 years ago. In January 1997 ICC opened a regional office in Hong
Kong to raise the world business organization's profile in the region, promote
ICC arbitration, and assist ICC national committees throughout the region.
ICC Thailand is chaired
by Pramon Sutivong who is Chairman of Bank Thai. The new national committee
has been established with the support of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce,
Industry and Banking which incorporates the Board of Trade of Thailand, the
Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers' Association.
ICC, the world business
organization, has national committees in more than 65 countries. ICC Bahrain,
ICC Caribbean and ICC Ghana were formed in June, ICC Czech Republic is to be
formed next week, and national committees in Uganda, Poland and Nepal are expected
to be inaugurated before the end of this year.
