The new Europe in the world economy

Paris, 1 April 1999 – The theme of the 33rd ICC World Congress in Budapest on 3-5 May 2000 will be "The new Europe in the World Economy." Business and political leaders from every part of the world are expected to attend.

ICC President Adnan Kassar was assured of full backing from the Hungarian government when he visited Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest last month. Mr Kassar told journalists afterwards: "I am confident that the congress will give useful impetus to Hungary’s bid to gain admission to the European Union."

President Arpad Goncz is to inaugurate the Congress, which promises to be a significant political as well as business event against the background of the EU’s impending enlargement.

ICC’s last congress in 1997 was in Shanghai. Other recent congresses have been in Cancun (Mexico), Hamburg, New Delhi, Stockholm and Manila.

The Budapest congress will be designed to appeal to a global business audience, with sessions devoted to the commercial interrelationship between Europe and other regions, particularly the Americas and Asia. Major issues for business that will be taken up include trade and investment liberalization, globalization and financial stability, and the impact of electronic commerce.

The development of east and central Europe in the light of the EU’s enlargement will be a feature of the debates, and a particularly strong participation from countries in the region is expected. President Kassar commented: "The event will be in tune with Hungary’s drive to extend its commercial ties, not only in Europe, but in the rest of the world as well."
