Cuba opens for business

Havana, 11 October 2000 -Cuba will open its doors to the world business community next week when the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) convenes its first, historic meeting there.

Cuban business representatives - plus members of the island nation's government - will gather in Havana for the two-day ICC regional meeting to discuss trade and investment in Latin America.

ICC is the world business organization. With more than 7,000 member companies in 134 countries it is the world's most vocal proponent of free trade and the benefits of private enterprise.

The conference comes only five months after the formation of ICC Cuba - a national grouping of local business entrepreneurs.

Incoming ICC president, Richard D McCormick - himself a leading American businessman - is a strong proponent of lifting the United States embargo of Cuba.

The ICC meeting in Cuba comes barely two weeks after the historic US government vote to end nearly 40 years of food and medicine sanctions against Cuba. It also falls just before the US election, where Cuba has once again emerged as a contentious political issue.
