New business and environment website goes online
Paris, 18 July 2000 - ICC introduces a website about business and the environment. The site aims to provide full information on management techniques, innovative technology and what environmental excellence and sustainable development mean for employees, suppliers and consumers.
The Environment and Sustainable Development pages - an integral part of the ICC's website - will communicate to a wider audience what the public should know about the environmental actions of companies of every size, in every industry.
The central feature is ICC's Business Charter for Sustainable Development, which is entering its 10th year and is now supported by 2,300 companies. This green code for business comprises 16 principles for environmental management. It has been published in over 20 languages, including all the official languages of the United Nations.
The Company Showcase highlights ICC member company achievements in environmental protection and sustainable development.
Under Useful links, more than 150 web addresses allow readers to access the world's leading environment and sustainable development websites.
The site is a portal for business activities in the areas of the environment and sustainable development, with links to companies that have endorsed the Cha
rter . There will be informed commentary on key environment and sustainable development issues affecting business - climate change, biotechnology, biodiversity, trade and the environment.
The site will examine how best to manage relations in the ever-changing world of globalizing markets.
There will also be a strong practical emphasis. We are developing a workshop on evnironmental management techniques and the broader issues of sustainable development. These pages will describe the latest tools and ideas to facilitate the integration of sound environmental practices into daily corporate operations.
On 5 May 2000, ICC and the United Nations Environment (UNEP) presented the first business awards for environmental achievement to a dozen companies, chosen from among 120 candidates. A total of 38 companies from 21 countries were put forward by ICC national committees for the final selection process.
The new website is profiling each of the winners. All of them will feature on the website over the next few months.
