Express carriers honour
ICC Secretary General
Paris, 24
May 2000 - Secretary
General Maria Livanos Cattaui has received the European Express Carrier Industry's
Hermes Award for ICC's outstanding contribution to the industry's development.
The award by the European
Express Association (EEA) recognises ICC's work on e-commerce, customs facilitation,
the liberalization of air cargo as well as the promotion of fair competition.
Presenting the award to
Mrs Cattaui on the occasion of the World Express and Mail Conference in Paris,
EEA Chairman Jaap Mulders said: "ICC's support in the sectors of customs
facilitation and the liberalization of air cargo is invaluable for the development
of e-commerce.
"For this key growth
industry to generate the kind of economic benefits and employment opportunities
that we expect, these efforts must be continued."
In reply, Mrs Cattaui said
the express carriers were among those who had best understood the enormous potential
and effectiveness of ICC as an umbrella organization to interface with policy
makers at the highest levels.
"The areas that you
have pioneered - promoting intermodal transport, customs facilitation and liberalization
of air cargo - are exactly the crucial needs of the over 7,000 member companies
of ICC - the users of transport."
