Business to confer on employment impact of knowledge economy

Paris, 28 April 2000 - Two leading business organizations are joining forces in a conference on 28 June in Geneva on the impact of the knowledge economy on business and the world of work.

The conference, called by the International Chamber of Commerce and the International Organization of Employers, will take the form of a roundtable debate. It will be held during a special session of the UN General Assembly in Geneva on poverty eradication, employment and social integration.

The roundtable will discuss the requirements of knowledge-based business, workforce skills, availability of venture capital, and the need for risk-taking entrepreneurial talent.

Speakers will also look at the way employment and labour standards are likely to evolve in the new century, including such issues as labour mobility and stability, training, fundamental principles and rights, and trade unionism in the 21st century.

A further theme is the special challenges and opportunities that the knowledge economy offers for the developing world.

The special session of the UN General Assembly has been called to review progress in meeting commitments made by governments at the UN's Social Summit in Copenhagen five years ago.

In parallel with the assembly, a week-long Geneva 2000 Forum is being held to provide business, labour unions and non-governmental organizations with a platform to discuss the issues being examined by governments.

The ICC/IOE roundtable, which will be of particular interest to government officials as well as business participants and labour unions, will be part of the Forum.

All who are registered for the Geneva 2000 Forum will be welcome to attend the ICC/IOE Roundtable at:

Centre International de Conférences (CICG),
Rooms 3 and 4 Combined,
Rue de Varembé 15,
1202 Geneva
