Paris, 22 August 2001 - Business preparations for next year's Earth Summit have found a new home on the internet with the launch of the Business Action for Sustainable Development (BASD) website.
A joint project of ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) and WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), the website will serve as a portal for all business actions leading up to the Second Earth Summit in Johannesburg, September 2002.
Welcoming the launch of the new site, chairman of the BASD Steering Committee, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart said he looked forward to it becoming an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the business contribution to sustainable development.
"BASD was conceived as a campaign to provide focus for business preparations as we move towards the Second Earth Summit in Johannesburg," he said. "We are determined to see business achievements in sustainable development recognised and want to ensure that business's crucial role as a provider of solutions is acknowledged. This website will not only show how far we have come, but also how much more we intend to do."
BASD facilitator, Eric Beynon said the new website would offer companies around the world an opportunity to share their sustainable development experiences and give them access to the web's largest network of companies with sustainable development interests.
"What we hope to create with this site is a portal which increases awareness of business participation in sustainable development and serves as a one-stop resource for information about business preparations for Johannesburg," he said. "Regular news stories will highlight BASD activities and all interested companies are invited to establish links from their own websites to the BASD home page."
