| Something to celebrate: Ghana will host the first ICC regional conference of 2001 |
Paris 31 August 2001 - Preparations for ICC's regional conferences in Africa, Asia and Latin America are well advanced. All three focus on regional business development - attracting foreign investors, mastering international trade techniques, getting the most out of the global economy.
First off the mark is ICC Ghana, which will host the world business organization's second Africa regional conference in Accra on 25-26 October. The conference meets against a background of determined efforts by many African countries and business leaders to enhance their nations' investment climate.
The conference, entitled "Working together for investment policies and actions in Africa,"will assemble an influential group of African business leaders who will take a close look at national and regional efforts to improve investment policy and increase Africa's internatinal competitiveness.
A key question facing African national and international business executives and government leaders at the Accra conference will be what African governments and international institutions can do to reduce the high risk perception associated with doing business in Africa.
The conference in Karachi on 11-12 November, designed to promote trade and investment in the South Asian region, will highlight Pakistan's geographic location and its role as "An emerging crossroad for trade and investment" - the event's title.
ICC President Richard D McCormick, in a message welcoming delegates to the Karachi conference, said: "In today's global economy, foreign direct investment is an economic imperative for developing countries. You do not have to look far to see that countries that have encouraged FDI have reaped considerable rewards."
ICC Pakistan, as the conference organizers, have set the objective of promoting legislation in Pakistan to facilitate international trade and investment in Pakistan and throughout the region.
The Latin America regional conference in Caracas on 29-30 November will give business leaders an early opportunity to as
sess the implications for international trade of the crucial ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization in Qatar at the beginning of November.
Entitled:"New economy - new realities", the conference will zero in on trade and investment in Latin America. There will be strong emphasis on plans for telecommunications development in Latin America.
