Globalization: Balancing act

| ICC President Richard
D. McCormick: "Widening wealth gaps do not occur because of globalization,
but because some countries do not embrace it." |
Melbourne,
Australia 21 March 2001
- Interviewed by Australia's Business Review Weekly, ICC President Richard D
McCormick dismissed as "a crazy idea" the notion that globalization
hurts developing countries.
Mr McCormick noted that
foreign corporations pay higher wages on average than local companies. But he
did believe that there was a widening gap between rich and poor countries, particularly
in Africa, where isolation and corruption have prevented advancement.
The ICC President maintained
that widening wealth gaps were not caused b
y globalization but resulted from
the failure of some countries to embrace it.
In his view, one obvious
reason for hostility to globlization was the greater connectedness globalization
brings. In such an inter-connected world, nations and corporations must tread
carefully, Mr McCormick was quoted as saying. He said even the image a nation
projects became a matter of geo-political and cultural importance.
