ICC strengthens Asian presence with new HQ in Singapore

ICC Asia - giving ICC even more influence in this most important economic region

Singapore, 29 November, 2002 - The new Asian headquarters of ICC: the world business organization, opened here today, amid bold predictions it would spearhead greater penetration in the region of ICC's essential services to business.

Singapore's Senior Minister of State, Trade & Industry, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam officially opened the new ICC Asia office before an audience of international diplomats, government ministers and senior regional business leaders.

The new ICC Asia head office has teamed with the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, and, via ICC Singapore, the Singapore Business Federation to create what ICC Secretary-General, Maria Livanos Cattaui described as a "new partnership to give ICC even more influence in this most important economic region."

Foremost among the aims of the new office is the promotion of commercial arbitration in Asia and the expansion of the ATA Carnet system.

Led by Mrs Lee Ju Song, ICC's new head office in Asia will also seek to foster greater cooperation with such regional economic groupings as ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) and APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation).

ICC Asia will work with the 21 ICC national committees already active in the Asia-Pacific region. ICC's Asian national committees span the Asian region. Each national committee represents the interests of their local business community to their respective national governments.

ICC Asia will undertake a busy year of activities in 2003, helping to coordinate seven arbitration forums, including in Vietnam, China and Taiwan, and an Asia regional meeting in Thailand, next November.

The ICC push to expand the ATA Carnet system in Asia is born of a desire to encourage governments to internationalise their customs practices, thus facilitating the flow of world trade.
