| World Chambers Network and dgMarket - using internet technology to open up business opportunities |
Paris, 1 July 2002 - Every year $800 billion worth of public sector contracts go up for grabs in developing countries and now, thanks to a partnership between the World Chambers Network (WCN) and dgMarket, such business opportunities are more accessible than ever before.
dgMarket is an internet tendering platform providing information on donor and government-funded business opportunities to small and medium enterprises world-wide. World Chambers Network (WCN) is an internet site providing business information and international trade support for chambers.
By combining forces, dgMarket and WCN have opened up public sector tenders to private companies. It is a collaboration which, according to Anthony Parkes, Director of ICC World Chambers Federation, offers huge potential to companies everywhere - the World Bank and other international financial institutions fund projects with over $50 billion in tender opportunities per year. Chambers should encourage their member companies to take advantage of this important business area.
dgMarket currently carries more then 500 new tender notices per day for projects funded by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, European Union institutions and member states and other international organizations.
"Internet technology allows government contracting to become more transparent," said Gerhard Pohl, Manager of the Informatics Group at the World Bank.
Companies can now set up detailed profiles to obtain e-mail alerts whenever a tender notice that meets their specific business interest is published online and linguistic differences are no longer a barrier.
"Notices are currently posted in five languages," said Pohl, "but, with the co-operation of local chambers of commerce, we expect this number to expand to 10 next month and may be 40 in the next two years. Companies in China or Russia will be able to receive emails in their native language informing them immediately about a tender notice from Venezuelan local government which was originally posted in Spanish."
WCN's partnership with dgMarket works in synergy with WCN's Global Business Exchange (GBX), an online service providing information on international business opportunities within the private sector.
160 chambers of commerce in 80 countries currently subscribe to WCN, a website designed by chambers of commerce for chambers of commerce to provide business information and international trade support. ICC World Chambers Federation is a managing partner of this project.
Chamber members often ask their local chambers where they can find business opportunities and WCN GBX, which goes under the slogan "Reach a world-wide audience without even having to leave your office," has proved to be an extremely quick and cost effective way of finding new contacts.
