Paris,
19 November 2002 - Tributes flowed in from the world business community
today in honour of Richard D. McCormick, outgoing Chairman of ICC: the world
business organization.
During a meeting of the
ICC World Council at the organization's Paris headquarters, business leaders
from as far afield as Brazil, Lebanon, the US and Korea paid tribute to Mr McCormick's
two-year leadership of ICC.
His successor, Vivendi Universal
CEO, Jean-Rene Fourtou, saluted the efforts of his predecessor, acknowledging
he had "learned a lot" from Mr McCormick.
"You have displayed
clever, sensitive leadership of this organization and I thank you for all you
have achieved in its name," Mr Fourtou said.
Another former ICC Chairman,
and CEO of Lebanon's Fransabank, Adnan Kassar said he felt privileged to have
worked with Mr McCormick.
"You have not only
my utmost respect for your professionalism, but you also have my enduring friendship,"
he said.
Speaking on behalf of ICC's
staff, the organization's Secretary-General Maria Livanos Cattaui saluted Mr
McCormick's "humour, kindness and fairness."
"We have gained from
your leadership because you always took an international view," she said.
"Your understanding of the global economy and your eagerness to make ICC's
work relevant to countries and economies everywhere, was inspirational."
President of the United
States Council of International Business, Tom Niles said his organization -
ICC's USA affiliate - was proud to have contributed such a distinguished leader
to the world business organization.
Mr McCormick, who travelled
an estimated 291,000 miles in his conduct of the office of ICC Chairman, said
his tenure had been "quite simply, a privilege".
