| Kofi Annan: Richard McCormick has built bridges to the UN |
New York, 14 October 2002 - United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has praised ICC President Richard D. McCormick for helping to build bridges between the UN and the private sector.
In a message to the Annual Award Dinner of the United States Council for International Business, Mr Annan said: "He has been a forceful advocate of a truly open world trading system, so that the benefits of globalization can be spread more widely.
"He has helped steer investment to the world's least developed countries. He has supported the Global Compact, my initiative to promote greater corporate responsibility in the areas of human rights, labour standards and the environment. "
Mr Annan said relations between the United Nations and the private sector have grown exponentially over the past five years. "This reflects the increasing recognition by the United Nations and people throughout the world of the power of the private sector to generate employment and economic growth and thereby contribute to human progress and well-being."
The Secretary General's message was delivered as the USCIB presented Mr McCormick with its 2002 International Leadership Award at its annual dinner.
Mr McCormick, former CEO of telecommunications giant US WEST, Inc, is in Beijing this week to attend an ICC conference on financial services.
At the end of the month he will be in Yaoundé, Cameroon, mobilizing business support for the African self-help initiative, the New Partnership for Africa's Development.
