a winning project? |
Paris,
14 August, 2003 - With only weeks to go before the world's largest
group of chamber of commerce executives descends on Quebec City, Canada
for the 3rd World Chambers Congress, judges are poring over 65 entries
from 29 different countries for the inaugural World Chambers Competition.
Devised to find the
most innovative projects recently undertaken by chambers of commerce around
the globe, the awards will recognize chamber ingenuity which i
s encouraging
the growth of business in local communities.
Awards for the World
Chambers Competition will be presented during the 3rd World Chambers Congress,
to be held September 15 -17, 2003 in Quebec City.
Avijit Mazumdar, Chair
of the World Chambers Federation (WCF) which is hosting the Congress,
said he has been thrilled with the enthusiasm shown by competition entrants.
"The World Chambers
Competition is an exciting way to recognize the creativity and business
acumen of chambers of commerce around the world," he said. "Based
on the amazing response we have had to this inaugural competition, we
have decided to make it a regular feature of all future World Chambers
Congresses."
The 65 entries to
the competition run the gamut of chamber innovation.
In South Africa, the Durban Chamber of Commerce's HIV/AIDS Desk for Business
is helping employers manage HIV treatment in the work place.
A world away, the
Saskatoon and District Chamber of Commerce (SDCC) is working to reverse
the economic downturn and human exodus in Saskatchewan with a program
to bolster the province's agribusiness.
The brainchild of
the WCF and the Quebec City Entrepreneur's Regional Chamber of Commerce
(CCREQ), the first World Chambers Competition has attracted contestants
from as far away as Mongolia, Ethiopia, Peru, Turkey and Finland.
The finalists will
be among the 800 congress delegates travelling to Quebec City from more
than 80 countries.
Mr. Mazumdar notes:
"The World Chambers Competition is one of the best ways we know to
galvanize all types and sizes of chambers, from all parts of the world,
to come together and share their wealth of experience, expertise and best
practice on chamber operations and services."
Adnan Kassar, Chairman
of the World Chambers Competition Jury and past Chair of the World Chambers
Federation points out that the benefits are not only in the results of
the Competition, but in the ability for chambers to exchange ideas. "The
enormous diversity of the entrants is reflective of the varied activities
and goals of chambers of commerce worldwide," he says.
Mr. Kassar adds, "While
there will ultimately only be one award winner in each category, our goal
is for the participants of the World Chambers Congress and all chambers
of commerce to be able to learn about the kinds of programs that chambers
of commerce are developing around the world."
The 3rd World Chambers
Congress will be co-hosted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and
the Quebec City Entrepreneur's Regional Chamber of Commerce (CCREQ), in
cooperation with the World Chambers Federation (WCF) and ICC, the world
business organization.
