- An environmental management programme in India, a rebranding campaign
in New Zealand, a small business database in Istanbul and a Swiss business
centre in Shanghai have taken honours in the inaugural World Chambers
Competition.
The four winning chambers
accepted their awards last night at a ceremony at the 3rd World Chambers
Congress in Quebec City.
The aw
ard categories
and the winners in each were:
- Best
Small Business Project: Istanbul Chamber of Commerce
for the creation and international distribution of a database of
local subcontractors;
- Best
Marketing/Communications Project: Auckland Chamber of Commerce
for its "b vital" re-branding and marketing campaign;
- Best
International Project: Fribourg Chamber of Commerce
for the creation of a business centre in Shanghai promoting Swiss

Unconventional Project: India Chamber of Commerce
for its creation of an Environment Management Centre to attract

The competition, a
prominent feature of the 3rd World Chambers Congress, drew 65 entries
from 29 countries. A website has been created to showcase each of the
65 entries, accessible at: http://www.iccwbo.org/home/wcfnew/awards/index.aspThe aim of the competition
is to recognize the most innovative projects recently undertaken by chambers
of commerce around the world in the service of their members.
The four winners were
selected from a field of 16 finalists. Competition in each of the four
categories was close, with jury chairman, Adnan Kassar describing the
quality of entries as "staggeringly impressive".
"The extremely
high quality of the entries made our jobs as judges very difficult,"
he said. "While four chambers have been identified as exceptional
successes, the remaining 14, and in fact all of the 65 entries, are success
stories.
"The projects we have reviewed, the people involved, and their dedication
to further develop and grow their private sector, for the benefit of their
communities, are all to be highly applauded."
This inaugural competition proved such a success - and such a popular
feature of the 3rd World Chambers Congress - organizers said it will become
a regular event at successive World Chambers Congresses.
