Contracts not sorcery define the legal rights of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Paris, 3 May 2004 - Film professionals, from award-winning writers and directors to producers and entertainment lawyers, will converge in Cannes on 13-14 May to discuss some of the major legal and practical issues they face in adapting literary works to cinema and remaking films.

ICC's 18th Conference on International Audiovisual Law, 'Books, Movies and Remakes', is timed to coincide with the 57th International Cannes Film Festival. Among the topics slated for discussion: distinguishing between 'inspired by' works and plagiarism, adapting contracts for comics to animated works or films and the working relationship between the producer and legal beneficiaries of an original work.

Participants include:

  • Carlo Dusi - Managing Director, Aria Films Limited, UK
  • William Nunez - Director and Writer (Full Metal Racket, Fear of Man), USA
  • John E. Johnson - Screenwriter, Producer and Director; Executive Director, American Screenwriters Association, USA
  • Jérôme Paillard - Executive Director, Marché du Film, France
  • Thomas F.R. Garvin - Partner, Garvin & Company P.C., Lawyer, USA

The conference is being jointly staged by ICC's Institute of World Business Law, the International Bar Association (IBA) and the International Association of Entertainment Lawyers (IAEL).

"This conference offers a unique opportunity to update knowledge on business, legal and technical issues in adapting literary works to cinema and remaking films", said Executive Manager of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, Laetitia de Montalivet.

Ms Montalivet added: "It provides an open forum for anyone interested in the major legal issues facing cinema and TV suppliers today. It is an original venue for participants to exchange views and share experiences with fellow professionals."

Registration for the conference includes free access to all Marché du Film facilities and services on 13-14 May as well as the possibility of registering for the rest of the conference at a 70% discount.
